If you had to name some sweet, woody scents, you might think of the classics - sandalwood, oud, patchouli. But what about birch?
Sharp, fresh, and strong, birch is an underrated perfume powerhouse. Similar to wintergreen’s minty and refreshing notes, you might be wondering what birch does when mingled with other essential oils in fragrance blends.
We're here to tell you that there are a lot of things that can go well together with birch. It's not just for deep woods fragrances (although it does smell fantastic in those blends). Birch actually has a lot more versatility than you might think.
Birch essential oil has been used in aromatherapy for many years because of its ability to soothe tension and stress while also providing relief from coughs and sore throats. It's also used in perfumery because it has a strong scent that doesn't fade easily over time - making it a great base note for blending with other oils!
Where does Birch Perfume come from?
Birch trees, or betula lenta, are native to eastern North America. These trees are a sight to behold - they can grow to a massive 115ft tall! The tree's small, green-tinged white flowers bloom in May and June, and its slender, silvery-white bark and light green oval leaves give it its characteristic black-and-white striped look.
Birch essential oil is steam distilled from the bark of such trees. And it’s a process - the bark has to be soaked for up to 12 hours before distillation can begin. It’s also heavier than water, so it sinks to the bottom of the chamber during this process.
What does Birch Perfume smell like?
Birch is certainly a unique fragrance that can take on various notes depending on what it’s blended with. The bark has a leathery scent, evoking that of an open fire in wintertime with its smoky, tar-like smell. It can also have a sweet freshness with a woody touch - think vanilla-esque cedar, a saccharine quality mixed with a deep earthiness. Its similarity to wintergreen also gives it a clean crispness, such as that of a Christmas tree in the snow.
Pretty unique, huh?
