Probably, when you hear the words ‘black truffle oil’, you immediately think of food. It’s true that truffles have been a culinary delicacy for centuries, but believe it or not, they’re also amazing in perfume too.
In fact, black truffle extract is one of the most sought-after, exclusive ingredients in the world. Here are some facts about it.
Black truffle fragrance – what is it?
Truffles have been prized by the rich and illustrious for thousands of years. In ancient Roman times, Plutarch believed they were created by lightning (not sure why), while Juvenal believed it was a combination of thunder and rain.
Whatever their origin, most people agree that they are delicious to eat. The black truffle (sometimes called a black perigord) comes from the Perigord region of France. They can usually be found near oak, cherry or hazelnut trees, and are harvested in late autumn.
Often, people have commented on the rich scent of black truffle oil. For example, Lord Byron used to keep a whole truffle on his desk, as he claimed its smell gave him literary inspiration! As such, it’s unsurprising that perfume houses started exploring ways in which to incorporate this aroma into their products.
Black truffle perfume – which one is best?
There aren’t many fragrances that feature black truffle oil; largely because it’s such an exclusive ingredient. If you’re keen to sample one, then the best option is undoubtedly Black Orchid.
This much-loved scent not only has the deep, heady base note of truffle, but is also perfectly counterbalanced with other ingredients too. For example, juicy (yet slightly bitter) bergamot adds a note of sharp zestiness, while jasmine lends the perfume a sense of airiness and exoticism.
